Comparisons and Examples
Comparisons can provide valuable information about meanings of words and phrases. Use your common sense when you evaluate a comparison. Look for words that signal that a comparison is coming, such as the following:

Many times you can determine the meaning of a term from examples provided in the text. Use your common sense, experience, and background knowledge to evaluate what the examples have in common. Sometimes examples are simply listed. Other times, however, signal words are used, such as the following:
