Chapter 4: Tomcat Installation Directory and Architecture

Overview

Tomcat has an elegant architecture and understanding it will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the book. The previous chapter included a brief view of the insides of Tomcat and in this chapter we shall have a more detailed discussion.

Tomcat's internal architecture closely mirrors the way that we administrate it. Each section of the Tomcat architecture is closely associated with a function of the server. It is possible to group administration tasks around these functional components, making administration more intuitive. Thus, to administrate Tomcat effectively, it is necessary for us to know both where to place files within the folder hierarchy of the Tomcat installation and the architecture.

In this chapter we will:

  • Gain an understanding of the default Tomcat installation

  • Become familiar with the generic web application structure

  • Understand Tomcat's architecture
