Section 18.3.  The Favorites Bar

18.3. The Favorites Bar

The Xcode team heard from developers that the automatic groups at the end of the Groups & Files list were useful but rarely used because developers spend almost all their time among the files at the top of the list. The various smart groups are usually scrolled out of view. The favorites bar is Xcode 2's answer to that problem.

Add the favorites bar to your project window by selecting View Show Favorites Bar. A gradient bar will appear in the project window, just below the toolbar. You can drag anything you want into the favorites bar. If the item is a file, clicking it will display it in the detail view and, if it's visible, the associated editor. If it's a group, holding the mouse button down will drop down a menu of all the items in that group.

The possibilities don't end with items from the Groups & Files list. Anything displayable in an Xcode editor window can go into the favorites bar. For instance, if you often refer to a page in the developer documentation, you can drag the icon from its title bar into the favorites bar.
